CAL/OSHA Scaffold Edge fall Protection Rule

This CAL/OSHA rule (§1716.2. Wood and Light Gage Steel Frame Construction, Residential/Light Commercial.) is related to using a scaffold to protect workers from falling from the exterior of a wood or light metal framed building.  The basic requirements are:

  • The platform shall not be more than 2 feet vertically below the top plate, and shall be fully planked.
The distance between the inboard edge of the platform and the building or structure wall shall not be more than 16 inches.
  • Additional provisions where a metal frame scaffold is used as an edge protection platform:
A 2” x 6” or larger toeboard shall be secured on edge parallel to the outer rail.
  • Scaffolds shall be secured in tension and compression to the structure at or near the top of the scaffold at each end and at every other frame not to exceed 20-foot intervals.
  • Guard railings shall extend not less than 42 inches vertically above the eaves if the outboard edge of the platform extends less than 12 inches horizontally beyond the eaves.

CAL/OSHA Construction Personnel Hoist Rule

Any building being constructed that is 60′ or higher above the ground will require a construction personnel hoist to be installed and running once the building hits 36′ in height.  CAL/OSHA enforces this rule sternly in CA.  Non-compliance with this rule may result in an Order Prohibiting Use (OPU), which would stop all activities above the second floor of the building until the hoist is installed and inspected by CAL/OSHA.

CAL/OSHA Heat Illness Prevention Program Regulation

This law specifies the need for rest, water and shade for workers in outdoor environments where the temperature is 80 degrees or hotter.  This regulation is focused on heavily by CAL/OSHA during the hot weather months.
